SARANAC LAKE – The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Gala Parade, sponsored by Hotel Saranac, will be held on February 14 at 1 p.m. The parade will take place at Broadway and Main Street from Garden Street to Lapan Highway, and the public is invited to assemble along the route. The procession is a crowd favorite and tradition of the Winter Carnival, featuring many creative floats, quirky performers, community members and much more.
Hotel Saranac recently became the sponsor of the parade after approaching the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee and expressing their interest in supporting the Winter Carnival and the community. This year’s Ice Palace design came about in December by the Ice Palace Workers 101, a local group who builds the palace. The Ice Palace is intended to be a symbol of the revitalization of Saranac Lake’s downtown district by resembling Hotel Saranac, which is currently undergoing major renovations to restore it to its original historic beauty.
“We weren’t expecting this generous gesture, but are certainly grateful for Hotel Saranac’s support of the Winter Carnival. It was a wonderful surprise”, said Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee Chairman Eric Foster.
The parade will be broadcast on local television channels 2 and 22 courtesy of Time Warner Cable. Parade performers will be judged in several classes covering businesses, civic or volunteer groups, youth groups, school groups, independent groups and animal units. Trophies will be awarded to the top two entries in each group that most conform to the theme, Groovy ‘60s, as well as the Louis Fobare Trophy for Best of Show.
Parade applications will be accepted until February 11 for those who wish to march in the parade. Applications are available online at www.saranaclakewintercarnival.com. Parade applications can also be picked up at the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, 193 River St. in Saranac Lake. Completed applications should be mailed to the Winter Carnival Committee at PO Box 829, Saranac Lake, NY 12983.
The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee, formally known as the Society for Promotion of Winter Carnival, Saranac Lake, Inc., is a not-for-profit 501(c)(4) organization of volunteers dedicated to planning and presenting an annual mid-winter festival. This 10-day, communitywide event traces its roots to a one-day Winter Carnival held in 1897 by the Pontiac Club. The Carnival honors its heritage every year by building an Ice Palace from blocks of ice harvested from Lake Flower’s Pontiac Bay, where carnival events have been traditionally held for generations. For more information, visit the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival website at www.saranaclakewintercarnival.com. The 2015 Winter Carnival will take place February 6 – 15.
